Apple expands its Australian lawsuit against Samsung
Apple turned up the heat on Samsung in Australia when it expanded its patent and trademark lawsuit to include 278 new infringement claims covering 22 patents and ten devices (some unreleased). This is a significant increase from the original lawsuit which targeted only the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and included with a handful of patent infringement claims. If the court grants Apple an injunction based on these new claims, it potentially could prevent Samsung from selling any Android device in the land down under. Samsung and Apple are embroiled in a

Motorola Looking to Win 2.25% of Apple's iPhone Sales
Court documents reveal that Motorola is seeking 2.25% of Apple's iPhone sales in order to license the standards-essential patents that Motorola holds. That percentage amounts to about $15 per iPhone (unsubsidized iPhone 4S 16GB). Motorola and Apple are amidst a patent battle in German courts, and the document came to light as part of this week's proceedings in those cases. At issues is whether or not Motorola's terms represent a fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) offer. Apple argues that the terms are not fair. Motorola has won two decisions against Apple, one in December and one on February 3. The first pertains to smartphone patents, while the second pertains to Apple's iCloud service and email syncing patents. AT&T Asks FCC to Place Conditions of Dish's Network Plans
AT&T has requested that the Federal Communications Commission set a number of requirements in place before Dish Network can build out its planned LTE-Advanced 4G network. AT&T wants Dish beholden to similar requirements levied on LightSquared. It would be required to cover 100 million POPs within 33 months and reach 260 million POPs within 69 months. AT&T also noted that it has "concerns" over Dish's use of 700MHz spectrum (which AT&T is also using for LTE). Dish responded this week to AT&T's request, saying such conditions would thwart its plans. Dish argues that LTE-Advanced will require much longer to deploy, as no other operator has deployed it yet. It also believes the differences between its commercial network (which will be sold directly to consumers) is different from LightSquared's wholesale approach, and requires more back-end systems be put into place. Last, Dish said its LTE-Advanced network will be deployed on its 2GHz spectrum holdings, not 700MHz. The FCC has not yet ruled on the matter. Huawei MediaPad hits AT&T’s tablet offering
AT&T is adding another tablet to its portfolio – Huawei MediaPad, which is already available in the U.S. as T-Mobile Springboard. Unfortunately, the device AT&T is selling comes with Honeycomb (rather than Ice Cream Sandwich) on board, though we’re sure Android 4.0 update will be released shortly. Moreover, the press release doesn’t mention multiple color options, hinting us the only version the carrier will offer is silver (which BTW looks pretty cool to me). AT&T has already started selling the MediaPad to its enterprise users at varying price points depending

Huawei Honor with AT&T 3G bands gets the FCC approval
It seems Cricket won’t be the only carrier to offer the Huawei Honor (aka Mercury), with FCC approving the GSM-based version of the device (Cricket’s version is CDMA one) that can sing along AT&T’s 3G network (WCDMA 850 / 1900 MHz). That, however, doesn’t necessarily mean AT&T will launch the Honor, though we’re sure Huawei would like to see that happening. Perhaps the Chinese company is eyeing the Canadian market, or wants to offer the phone unlocked to the American public. In any case, the Honor is one of the

Motorola scores a permanent injunction against Apple’s iCloud in German Court
Motorola has just scored a pretty significant injunction against Apple’s iCloud, as a decision in its favor was handed down by judge Andreas Voss in a German court room. The “permanent injunction” forced the Cupertino-based company to remove most of its products from its German-based online store including the iPhone 3G, the iPhone 3GS, and the iPhone 4 as well as any 3G-enabled iPads. Both companies have been in a patent battle for months, with Motorola getting the best of the iPhone maker so far. Lots of developments have occurred after this initial ruling, so lets

More smartphones were shipped than PCs last year
Canalys research firm issued a report today that makes us all think back to our very first time getting a blue screen of death on a PC. According to combined statistics from 2011, manufacturers shipped more smartphones than computers in 2011 – 488 million smartphones hit shelves last year, while only 414.6 million PCs did. Though tablets were supposed to reign in the “post-PC” era, the PC numbers do factor in tablet shipments. “Smart phone shipments overtaking those of client PCs should be seen as a significant milestone,” VP and

Yahoo! adds app directory to search page
Update: Apparently Yahoo! has had this feature since June. Consider this an "in case you forgot post." Yahoo! might not be the first search engine you reach out to on a daily basis, but if you are looking for a new iOS or Android app, you might want to give it a look. The oft-forgotten search company has now added an Apps tab to its search page that offers search results populated with apps from the Android Market and iTunes App Store. Users can filter the apps into price brackets or categories, and iOS and Android apps are segregated by tabs. Once you have found the app you want, you can have it sent to your handset over SMS, click a link to go directly to the respective app store, or scan a QR code with your phone to start the download right away. Yahoo! also provides a list of trending apps and reviews on apps from Yahoo! users. With either app store boasting hundreds of thousands of apps these days, any help finding the one you want is greatly appreciated.

Apple Resumes Selling Older iPhones in Germany
Apple was able to convince a German court to suspend an injunction that went into effect earlier today that temporarily prevented it from selling the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and iPad 2 via its web site. Apple lost a patent ruling to Motorola in December that effects the aforementioned devices. The patents in question cover GPRS standards. Apple claims that Motorola is seeking licensing terms for the patents that don't comply with fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) rules. The iPhone 4S was excluded from the patent ruling because it uses a Qualcomm baseband rather than one from Infineon. Motorola had to post a $100 million bond for the ban to take effect., but Apple won a reversal. It isn't clear how long the reversal will last. Separately, German courts today issued another ruling against Apple and its iCloud service. Apple was found guilty of infringing on a Motorola patent concerning how email is synced between devices. The ruling gives Motorola leeway to inquire about past device sales as it prepares requests for damages. Apple is appealing the decisions. iTunes Match pairing explicit songs with censored versions, Apple says fix on the way
Apple's iTunes Match service is the company's answer to Google Music and the Amazon Cloud Player as a way to access all of your music wherever you are. The difference is that iTunes Match doesn't actually upload or store your music; rather it scans your library and then offers the songs you own from Apple's own collection. This normally sounds like a great plan (no uploading!), but as some users have recently learned, the system doesn't always work as advertised.

Google Wallet available for Nexus S, Galaxy Nexus used on AT&T
Google Wallet has had a rocky start since its introduction last year, with it only being officially available for Google Nexus S 4G owners on Sprint, despite other devices likes the unlocked Nexus S and the GSM and LTE versions of the Galaxy Nexus having the proper hardware support for the service. That seems to be changing, however, as the Google Wallet app is now appearing for Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus owners who are using the devices on AT&T's network.

How to select the right ultrabook for you
And I’m continuing to rant about ultrabooks. This time we’ll help you select the right model for you. Here are some things you should consider. Screen size Most ultrabooks have a 13.3-inch screen, though there are some with smaller and bigger screens, and it’s kinda safe to bet we’ll see even more proliferation in the future. For instance, the Asus UX21 comes with an 11.6-inch display, while LG Xnote Z430 and HP Envy 14 Spectre both have a 14-inch screen. Size and weight The screen size is (obviously) directly proportional

White HTC Sensation with preloaded Android 4.0 hitting Europe on March 1st
HTC Sensation in white will hit (at least parts of) Europe on March 1st. But wait, there’s more – that version of the device also comes with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich preloaded, hinting us all of the Sensation users will get the new software in early March (or so we hope). Google Chrome to Phone Android app gets new look and feel, landscape support
Google updated its Google Chrome to Phone Android app with two new features. First of all, you’ll notice a new (improved) look and feel. Perhaps even more important is the added landscape support, which for some reason was missing from the initial app. You may be browsing (and consequently using Google Chrome to Phone) in a portrait mode exclusively, but I’m sure folks with side-sliding phones (those with QWERTY keyboards and perhaps the Sony Ericsson Xperia PLAY) more often than not rely on landscape view. Finally, this release also fixes

Motorola wins in Germany against Apple, iCloud features banned, iPhone 4 disappears online
The court awarded Motorola an injunction against the push email feature in iCloud, so German iOS users will probably be requested to set their email checking in another mode. Apple has, due to an earlier ruling from December, also pulled its 3G/UMTS products from its German online store last night, such as the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, and the 3G-enabled iPad. Retialers are still selling those, though, and Motorola will probably have a battle before it to ban those 3G products across the board.
